Use whois with DNS query websites

DNS query websites allow you to perform whois searches to find out the following information about other websites:

  • Registrar – the name of the organization (registrar) that registered the domain name. Some DNS registrars are GoDaddy.com and Network Solutions.
  • DNS Servers – the names of the public DNS servers that authoritatively answer DNS queries for the domain names queried.
  • Organizational details – names, addresses, email addresses for the organization that owns the domain name you queried.

For example, a whois search for the domain name cisco.com yields the following results:

Some of the common DNS query websites are DNSstuff, BetterWhoIs, and DNSDigger. You may want to bookmark this in-depth collection of Web-based network query tools.

Note: whois queries originating from DNSstuff will not work with domain names that have been registered through Network Solutions. You will only be told:
.
This domain is registered through Network Solutions. Please visit http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp to complete your look-up.
.
If you want to use whois in a command line environment, its usage and options are explained here.
